The Alabama Policy Institute (API) has announced the launch of a new initiative called the Alabama Department of Government Efficiency, or ALDOGE. This program aims to tackle inefficiencies within the state government by addressing issues such as regulatory overreach and lack of transparency.
For 35 years, API has advocated for limited government and greater accountability in Alabama. The creation of ALDOGE is inspired by the national DOGE program led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. According to API, spending in Alabama has increased significantly over the past decade, with combined revenues growing by over $6.3 billion. Despite this growth, inefficiencies remain prevalent.
Elon Musk recently emphasized the importance of efficient use of public funds at a meeting with Congress members in Washington, DC: “We need to make sure we’re spending public money well.” U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson also highlighted the need for a more responsive and efficient government.
ALDOGE's focus extends beyond cost savings to include tackling regulatory overreach and misuse of taxpayer funds. For instance, despite stagnant growth in recent years, there have been increases in public school support staff positions and state government vehicle registrations.
Vivek Ramaswamy expressed that success will be measured not only through cost savings but also by restoring self-governance: “DOGE’s full success will be measured not just in cost savings, but in restoring self-governance in America.”
Stephanie Smith, President of API, stated that these challenges are present at both federal and state levels: “Regulatory overreach and lack of accountability aren’t just federal problems... ALDOGE will address these issues head-on.”
API encourages participation from state employees, lawmakers, and citizens to help identify wasteful practices within government spending. The goal is to create practical solutions that improve efficiency while reinforcing principles of self-governance.
