Week ending Jan. 7: 17 businesses registered in cities found in Shelby County

There were 17 businesses that registered in cities within Shelby County in the week ending Jan. 7, according to the Alabama Secretary of State.

This is 70 percent more than the week before, when 10 businesses were registered.

Alabaster registered the most businesses in Shelby County.

More than 99 percent of Alabama's businesses are considered small, with more than 47 percent of Alabama's employees working for a small business, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

A Civic Economics study found $100 spent at a locally-owned business puts $47 back into the local economy while the total is just $13 for non-local businesses.
